It was a great year for Girls Select Rugby in the MetNY. After several tryouts and sessions in NYC, Long Island and New Jersey, we got our first playing time together in a controlled scrimmage against the Eastern Pennsylvania RU Select Side. We then travelled to Vermont and enjoyed being the first side to ever knock off the New England side at the Northeast Championships. We also played well on Sunday and finished in second place in the Territory. The entire weekend was a rugby and bonding success, notwithstanding the BBQ getting washed out.With no girls divisions in any summer 7s tournaments, we entered sides in the Women Division at both the Princeton and Hell’s Gate 7s Tournaments. Many tries were scored in the sweltering heat. In contrast, our last event for the year was the NY 7s in the freezing cold. Although it was hard to get a groove going due to the cold, some tries were scored, and some games were won. The roster for the day was:Christine Woodrick, East Islip Vicki Burns, East Islip Ashley Lipari, East Islip Ashley Rivera, East Islip Samantha Fontenez, New York Lucy Dawson, Union Gloria Santiago, East Hampton (Lost & Found from the NY 7s - I ended up with a pair of navy Nike shorts, a pair of navy sweats, and a blue aluminum water bottle with peace signs on it.
