Met NY Teams Win Two Northeast Rugby 2010 Championships

On Sunday November 21, 2010, Met NY clinched NRU's D2 and D3 Championships.  Met NY was shut out of Sunday's D1 final, in which Mystic River beat Boston Irish Wolfhounds in overtime.  On Saturday, Mystic edged New York, and Boston Irish Wolfhounds beat Long Island.  But Met NY's Village Lions and Rockaway won out over their rivals from near and far in D2 and D3 respectively.  Congratulations all round.

Met NY Rugby’s Senior Men’s Competitions Winners

Met NY Rugby concluded its fall 2010 season last weekend.  Excellent, hard fought matches produced winners in all three men’s divisions.

In Division 1, Long Island won, followed by New York, Monmouth and Morris.  All four teams proceed to crossover matches against NERFU Division 1 teams this Saturday, November 13.  Long Island hosts New Haven, New York hosts White Plains, Monmouth travels to play Boston Irish Wolfhounds, and Morris travels to take on Mystic River.

In Division 2, Lansdowne came to last Saturday's match undefeated in their regular season, but fell to the Village Lions who therefore won first place in D2.  Met NY has ruled Lansdowne ineligible for NRU playoffs this year because of disputes over Lansdowne's compliance with USA Rugby eligiblity rules for non-green card holders.  As a result, the Village Lions and the next three teams according to the season's reported match results, namely North Jersey, Connecticut Yankees and Danbury, will play in NRU's crossover matches.  This weekend, Village Lions host Newport, NoJo hosts Boston Irish, CT Yankees travel to Hartford, and Danbury travels to take on Middlesex.

In Division 3, Rockaway bested Brooklyn last weekend, winning the right to a bye and a place in NRU playoffs on Randall's Island on November 20 and 21.  Brooklyn travels this weekend for a crossover match vs MIT.

Good luck to all our Met NY teams in the upcoming crossovers and playoffs.  Please come support them on Randall's Island on November 20 and 21.  Thanks to our Met NY Host Commitee, details including maps, and a Saturday night social are on www.nruplayoffs.org.  Schedules and hotel recommmdation information will be announced soon.

Met NY Playoffs Feature Standoffs in All Mens Divisions

Saturday November 6 promises to be a significant day in Met NY rugby.  In Mens D1, Morris take on Long Island, currently sitting in first place.  And Monmouth and New York Rugby are battling for hosting privileges vs NERFU next weekend.

But all the drama is in D2, where Village Lions face Lansdowne for D2 domination.  Lansdowne are unbeaten this year, but qualification and playoff eligibility questions swirled around them this last week.  One thing is clear, however:  if Lansdowne put rules interpretation behind them and beat the Village Lions today, noone can take that victory away from them.  Noon at Randall's Island.  D3 offers a great match too, with Brooklyn v. Rockaway in what promises to be a great matchup.

For Colleges, Columbia host the wildcard weekend for the Ivy League at Bakers Field.  For Mens D1 colleges, it's the last big weekend, with Kings Point at Fordham, and Stony Brook Seawolves at Southern Connecticut.  But in mens adult rugby, tension is growing for the playoff finals for the whole Northeast in D1, D2 and D3.  Those playoffs are just two weeks away, also on Randall's Island.

MetNY Gets Geared Up for D1 Collegiate Playoffs

Army10Artwork8X8W

With the creation of the CPL (College Premier League), USA Rugby designated several local unions as “automatic qualifier” regions. As MetNY was selected to be such a union, the winner of the Met NY’ division 1 will have an automatic bid to compete in the college rugby national championship tournament. In years past, the Met NY’s divisional winner had to go through the NY State Rugby union and the ever dangerous New England Rugby Union before making it into the college championship tournament. With such a great opportunity on the line, the Met NY D1 playoff race could not be more exciting.

Met New York Hosts USA Rugby's National All-Star 7s

Photographs are now available from Emirates Airline USA Rugby All-Star 7s, which Met New York Rugby successfully hosted on Randall's Island on August 28-29.  Photos, courtesy of Jess Bunshaft, are at brownhoundphotos.com.

The two day event featured the top men's and women's 7s players flown in from around the country.  Opening ceremonies on Satuday kicked off with the national anthem sung phenomenally by professional opera singer and rugby player Stephen Gaertner.  Tickets sold out for the VIP area, which featured premium seating, catered food and unlimted imported beers and wines.  Hundreds of spectators enjoyed the beer garden and grilled food concession, open throughout the weekend, and product giveaways and merchandise sales from USA 7s.  The event was broadcast with live commentary, now archived through UStream.
