The team was initially formed in the late 1980's as a social club mainly playing local tournaments and matches against FDNY. In 2004 the team was revived by Joe Panico, with the help of veteran players Sean McCarthy and Steve Berger and currently competes in the METNY RFU Division III. The NYPD Rugby Club is a non profit organization comprised of Police Officers, Detectives, Sergeants, and Lieutenants who dedicate their time not only playing the emerging sport of rugby, but also raising funds for the club and the charities it supports.
