Local Teen Makes the USA U17 Team!

Congratulations to the Jeff Fell of Garden City HS on making the USA U17's national rugby team tour to England.

U-17s Press release….   Immediate…..               2-20-07

The newly formed USA Under 17s program met in Dallas TX last week for a 4 day camp that was intended to prepare and select a final team roster for its tour to Millfield England.   The U-17s will travel this April where they will face Portugal, Romania and Canada at the International Festival.

Daily routines had the squad in 3-a-day practice sessions that were time formulated to the length of a match.   Between sessions the team were exposed to High Performance routines like ice baths, specific nutrition and hydration needs all of which were intended to allow peak performance at each session.

“We spent a great deal of time talking about and developing a total team concept” said coach Sean O’Leary.   “While the team is focused on the prize, they fully understand that playing together is as important as anything right now.”   Several sessions included team building concepts and that showed productive at the end of the week.

“We are really starting to play together now after a few camps and some specific direction, commented Ty Salamon from Penn High School.   The coaches have us working toward a complete team game concept and taking the individualism out of our processes- I think its working!”

The camp practice sessions closed and the team faced competition with the Texas High School Select Side at beautiful Gateway Park in Fort Worth.   The sun warmed the ample crowed who witnessed the U-17 side edge Texas 26-22 after 3 periods of unlimited substitution play.   “The boys were impressive at times today, when they implemented the processes we were pushing to accomplish.   While there is always room to improve we are quite happy with the progress of this bunch and the way they are bonding is very special, said Bart Bottorff, U-17 Program Director.

The Under 17s players and staff would like to thank the Texas Rugby Union for its support, help and direct in making this event possible.   Special thanks go to Mike Kwedar for his efforts.
