In Memoriam - Monmouth RFC Founding Member Brian Harris

Brian Harris, 77, a founding member of Monmouth Rugby Club (NJ) and long time servant of the game passed away on February 2nd after a long and valiant battle with cancer in Heathsville. VA.

Brian, a native of England, and his wife, Sheila, emigrated from the United Kingdom to Canada in 1970, and eventually settled in Middletown, N.J., in 1975.  Brian was a marine engineer by trade and held various management and executive positions with companies related to the fishing and shipping industry.

However, for 21 years Brian’s passion was the Monmouth Rugby Club.  He was a founding member of the club from its early days as Brookdale RFC.  He held several club officer positions in the club, notably as treasurer.  Brian was instrumental in helping the club realize its dream of clubhouse ownership in 1997.   On the field, Brian lived the dream of every true rugger, actively playing in club and Old Boy matches well into his seventies.

In 1997, he retired to VA with Sheila, but was still actively involved in Monmouth RFC activities.  He is one of the original members enshrined in the Monmouth RFC Hall of Fame.

In addition to rugby, Brian enjoyed skiing, cycling and golf.

Brian  is survived by his loving wife, Sheila; his daughter, Susan, and granddaughter, Erin Harris-MacLeod, both of Nova Scotia; his son, Ian, and wife, Susan Patricia, and their two children, Cole and Lauren, from Chicago, and his brothers, Keith and his wife, Margaret, and Ronald and his wife, Iris, of England. He was predeceased by his father, James Edward, and mother, Irene, of Cleckheaton, England.

A memorial service was held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Kilmarnock, Va., on February 5th. .  Brian’s family will be having a memorial service in NJ later this month so his club mates can join them in celebrating his life.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Virginia, 1328 Tappahannock Blvd., Tappahannock, Va. 22560
