Head Men's Rugby Club Coaching Position

The Potomac Athletic Club (PAC), a member of the United States Rugby Football Union Super League, invites applicants and nominations for the position of Head Coach. PAC offers a highly competitive team that has won a National Championship in 1995, and has qualified for the Super League Playoffs in three of the past 4 seasons. PAC Rugby seeks an individual who is ready to take the club to a National Championship.

The PAC mission reads: To compete in an environment of hard work and integrity that enables our athletes to achieve rugby excellence. Potomac Athletic Club's vision is to be the model rugby program in the country and has adopted three core values that we ask our coaches and players to adhere to: (1) a confident and humble pride, (2) respect for the dignity of ALL stakeholders, and (3) loyalty, built on honest and trusting relationships.

The position reports to the Board of Directors of the Club. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Coaching of the team toward athletic excellence.
  • Selections
  • Evaluation and recommendation for improvement of players' talents.
  • Identification, and recruitment of qualified athletes.
  • Development and execution of plans for the season, including competitive schedules, practice schedules, and training and conditioning programs.
  • Planning, organizing, and conducting of practices.
  • Assistance in the preparation of travel arrangements, equipment orders, and awards in conjunction with other Board Members.
  • Assistance with special events and tournaments.
  • Establishment and maintenance of effective relationships with the players, the Board, the President, alumni, high school coaches, media, and the general public.
  • Commitment to and responsibility for adhering to all rules and regulations of the Potomac Athletic Club, USA Super League, and the USA Rugby Football Union.

Required Qualifications:

  • Collegiate or adult club level coaching experience.
  • Demonstrated recruiting success in a successful program.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of coaching and developing athletes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of USARFU rules.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of strategies, tactics, and the teaching of high level rugby skills required for national test level rugby.
  • Demonstrated experience working with highly skilled men's rugby players, or National/Regional Programs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Post season experience at the D1 Level or higher.
  • Championship experience at collegiate, D1, D2 or D3 Levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate support in the broader local rugby community as well as with Alumni.

This position is a 12-month (fall and spring season) appointment, renewal decisions are made immediately following the Super League Season (spring). Most of the PAC Rugby players are working professionals; therefore, practice hours are typically 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.  Competition is typically on weekends.  This is a compensated position.
