Important Information From Tom Tani
To
the Clubs, Colleges, and High Schools:
Attached is an email from one of the referees asking how
refs should deal with referee abuse from the sidelines. This
points to a recent High School match. The email below is the
answer I sent to him and I feel that the clubs should be
aware of how we, as referees, will be dealing with any such
occurrences in the future.
Please remember there is a procedure and documentation on
the RRSNY website that you can use to submit any comments
about a referee. I Have attached the original email that
referees to this below along with a copy of the form. Abuse
from the sidelines is not one of them and will not be
tolerated.
Any
questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Tony and
Lex, please pass to the High Schools

Re:
[RRSNY] ref abuse and spectator misconduct
XXXXX
(and everyone)
Thanks for the email. Regarding
the recent "stupid people tricks" in the High Schools last
week, I sent Lex Maccubbin (the HS Coordinator) copies of
the report from Rob Perle and he has, in turn issued an
email to high schools advising them that this nonsense ends
now.
I do not think that referee
abuse is anything new, it has been around since the
beginning of time. However, what has been happening lately
is that is instead of being tolerated, it is getting
reported and dealt with by the referees and the respective
LAU Disciplinary Chairs, which is a GOOD thing!
To answer your question on
how we "get in front of the issue":
1) Do NOT tolerate it.
At the first instance of abuse from a player, stop the game
and deal with the player with a warning and/or a card. Make
sure his captain and coach are part of the conversation.
2) Report the incident in
detail on your game report. ALSO, advise me via email. I
will make sure that the Met NY Disciplinary Chairman (Mike
Freker) and the club/player(s) involved know that we are
aware of the incident and have asked the Met NY DC to act on
it. Anyone who knows me knows I WILL follow up on it.
3) As stated in the recent
email that was sent on this, you can and should card a
player, but you cannot card a coach or spectator. What you
CAN do is stop the game, and instruct those folks to stop
the silliness. If it continues, stop the game again and tell
them to leave the playing enclosure. In both cases, advise
the captain (and coach if the person in question is a player
on the sideline or spectator) of your actions and that the
game will not continue until they shape up or are gone.
Make sure to report the
incident in your game report to the society. Even if there
is no card issued, I will still make the Disc Chair is aware
of the incident and he may decide to take action anyway.
Everyone who has refereed
has different tolerance levels for this sort of nonsense.
The bottom line is no one's enjoyment of the game should be
compromised by these dimwits and the above steps should be
your guide in how to deal with it.
I will be sending a copy of
this to the Met Union Website Manager, Chris Page, who will
post it on the site, so all the clubs know about it and
cannot plead ignorance.
Any questions, give me a
shout!

Subject: [RRSNY] ref abuse and spectator misconduct
All -
Two instances of ref
abuse last week at high school games. I had a real
experience myself over the weekend. Jack Clark is red carded
and pulls his team from the pitch. An email last week says
you can only redcard a player. Judah Boulet mentions abuse
in his interview. A couple of other references in the latest
issue of Rugby mag, one where it was a second serious
offense.
Is it getting
worse? Is it just a coincidence that it is happening all at
once? How to handle it? Are the clubs aware that this is a
serious issue and what the ramifications are for abuse? And
exactly what are those ramifications? It is not just
happening locally but in New England and on the west coast
too.
I for one don't
like the trend. I think we need to get put in front of this
one. Any ideas how?

Minimum Requirements for Clubs
Hello
Again:
While we
are on the subject of minimum field requirements, here
are a few more items that the club (and the referee)
should be addressing when confirming the match. None of
this stuff is new, and I am certain I have addressed it
before, but for the sake of the newer admins (esp the
colleges) here goes…..
IF YOU ARE A COLLEGE OR CLUB
- Send it to me directly, but also copy Tony Brown
(Colleges) or your appropriate Met Union Club Coordinator.
We will review any info received and will take appropriate
action if it is necessary.
This is very
important - I (and the RRSNY Executive Committee) will
address issues only if they ARE IN WRITING
. Either in this form
or email. Calling me or any RRSNY officer to speak about a
ref on the phone is "hearsay". "Hearsay" is b*******t. If
you have an issue, put it in writing and it will get our
attention.
Also, the comments
must be matter of fact and professional in tone. They must
not be offensive or personal.
Unprofessional
comments will get the treatment they deserve….. Deletion!
This memo is not because
of anything bad, but because some questions were asked
and it was deemed appropriate to address them now
You all know how to
reach me, so please do not hesitate to contact me with
any questions!
