Four Leaf Fifteens Re-Cap

Montauk won the Premier Division and Philadelphia the Women’s crown at the Village Lions Four-Leaf Tournament, sponsored by ING, on March 18 in New York. Montauk made short work of Old Blue in the final, getting two tries apiece from massive #8 Garth Wakeford and flyhalf Gordon Trotter to run away with a 38-3 win. Tries also went to scrumhalf Andy Reilly and wing Bobby Yurkewitch, with four conversions from Reilly. Old Blue, who’d topped Montauk in a warmup the week before, had its Super League contingent facing off against Boston elsewhere in New York.

“It was a battle of both fitness and defense with neither team giving an inch,” said Montauk flyhalf/coach Trotter, who cited the performances of newcomers Stephen Daige, Julian Uribe and Yurkewitch, among others. “Montauk progressed with each game, getting into a grove of good defense and free-flowing rugby.”

Philadelphia took Women’s honors with a 33-0 win over the host Village Lions, with tries from Sheara Williamson, Carla Kingery, Kristin Aliberto, Emily Record and Elise Myer. Myer and Record recorded conversions. “After returning from the Champagne Classic in San Diego the prior week, it was vital that we get our non-traveling players up to speed in preparation for the upcoming spring season,” said
Philly captain Angie Marfisi. “Our success can be measured not by winning the championship (which is nice), but by the significant improvement from match
to match by all of our players.”

South Jersey was the Social champ following a 37-0 win over Rockaway, and Seton Hall won College honors with a convincing win over York.
