2005 U19 LAU All-Star Tournament, Baltimore MD, June 18-19, 2005 The METNY RFU U19 All-Stars played in the 2005 U19 LAU All-Star Tournament winning all four of their matches to take home the championship trophy. Six teams were divided into two pools of three and played round robin. The top two teams in each pool advanced to the championship semi-finals. The tournament rules allowed rolling substitutions so all the reserves played in each match. Match # 1: METNY 29 PRU North 19 The score of this match is deceiving as the Met NY side ran out to a 29-0 lead at half time and then coasted home for the victory. Scoring for the METNY team was provided by Tyler Maccubbin 2 tries, 2 conversions; Ed Cullen, Conrad Egusa, and Joe Heaney 1 try each. METNY RFU Roster: 1. JT Sheehan, 2. Joe Heaney, 3. Match #2: METNY 23 EPRU 10 A hard fought match that was tied 5-5 at the half. The METNY side put things together in the second half to put the match in the win column. Match #3 (semi-final) METNY 18 North Carolina 15 A very physical match that was tied 5-5 at the half. North Carolina, who had beaten PRU south and Upstate NY on Saturday, played smash mouth rugby and disrupted the METNY backs. The squad, however, showed tremendous heart and ground out a win despite giving up two tries on tap penalties by North Carolina. Scoring for the METNY team was provided by Bobby Mroz and Joe Heaney 1 try each; Tyler Maccubbin 2 penalty kicks, 1 conversion. METNY RFU Roster: 1. Manny Garcia, 2. Joe Heaney, 3. Reserves: JT Sheehan Julian Safar, Peter Brink, Tom Toomey, Conor Hynes, and John Cronje Match #4 (Final) METNY 27 EPRU 5 In a rematch of their second match on Saturday, METNY played EPRU who had beaten Upstate NY, 8-5 in the other semi-final. For the first time all weekend the Met NY side fell behind on the scoreboard as the EPRU scored first on an unconverted try. The METNY side answered with a try in the corner by John Cronje and followed up with two more tries before the half to take a 17-5 lead. In the second half two more tries by Met NY sealed the victory. Cronje’s performance in the final earned him the MVP award for the tournament. Scoring for the METNY team was provided by John Cronje 3 tries; Ed Cullen and Peter Brink 1 try each; Tyler Maccubbin 1 conversion. METNY RFU Roster: 1. Manny Garcia, 2. Joe Heaney, 3. For the weekend the METNY team scored 97 points (16 tries) to their opponents 49 points (8 tries). Ed Cullen lead all scorers with 4 tries, John Cronje and Conrad Egusa had 3 tries each, followed by Joe Heaney and Tyler Maccubbin who each had 2 tries, and Peter Brink and Bobby Mroz 1 try apiece. Maccubbin also added 3 penalty kicks and 4 conversions to lead all scorers with 27 points.A week after their successful weekend in Baltimore, the METNY traveled to Colorado to play in America’s Premier U-19 Tournament. The 2005 edition of America’s Premier U-19 Tournament held in Denver CO on June 25-26, 2005 featured 16 All-Star teams from the USA, Canada, and Europe. Playing against teams studded with USA U19 players the METNY side went 2-2 and to end up in 7th place out of 16 teams. Colorado Match Report.
