New Division III Collegiate Program at Molloy University

Brendan Droge recently has begun a new Rugby program at Molloy College out on Long Island. He is a recent college graduate (Iona) himself and hopes to build an impressive program with the assistance of others in the Union. If you would like to help please feel free to email him at bdroge@molloy.edu

Nickname: Droge

Height: 5’10” (I’d love to say 5’11” but I’m probably pushing it

Weight: 170lbs

Birthplace: Queens, New York

Birthdate: October 21, 1983

Residence: Merrick, New York

School: Graduated from Iona College in May 2005

Years Playing Rugby: 4 years

Positions: Inside/Outside Center, Fullback

Present Club: I look forward to playing with the Long Island RFC this spring

Previous Clubs: Iona College RFC

Most Respected Teammates: The original 8-10 guys who, along with myself, resurrected the Iona College RFC in Fall 2002

Most Respected Opponent: My teammates at Iona…the guys I used to battle against day in and day out for three years in practice

Best Memory Playing Rugby: I have three of them, first, being named a captain my senior year at Iona, second, separating my shoulder a little more than five minutes into my rugby career against Hofstra (I knew at that point I had officially become a rugger) and third, scoring my first try at the Big Apple Classic against Stony Brook

Biggest Disappointment in Rugby: As a result of graduating, not getting a chance to play at Iona this year…the team’s first year in Division I

Tours: I hope to take the Molloy RFC on one some day in the near future

Biggest Influence in Rugby: Those same 8-10 guys who put in countless hours, blood, sweat and tears to help rebuild the Iona RFC

Comments on the level of (Met Union) US Rugby: The Met Union houses a number of fantastic rugby programs and has, along with the USA Rugby, done a tremendous job of not only introducing, but supporting the game of rugby in men’s/women’s club teams, colleges and high schools throughout the tri-state area

What are your goals starting the Rugby Program at Molloy: I hope to develop a long and storied tradition of rugby excellence at Molloy and further introduce this great sport to people throughout Long Island

How did you start the Rugby Program: With the graces and support of the Athletic and Student Development Departments at Molloy College

Personal Goals with this program: I hope to instill the same enthusiasm and passion that I have for rugby into the young men that I coach, and motivate them to be the best human beings they can be both on and off the field

Has there been any assistance from alumni: We have yet to get the alumni involved, but we invite all past, present and future Molloy students, faculty, staff and administrators to our games and any support they can give us would be much appreciated

What kind of field do you have: We are in the process of finding one

Favorite Quote: I actually have two: “Always be the hammer, never the nail” – Mike Leach, Texas Tech head football coach

“I hope that when I die, they bury me upside down so my critics can kiss my ass” – Bob Knight, long time Indiana University head basketball coach now at Texas Tech
