Morris Women Reach Out to Collegiate Players MARCH 25, Morris Plains—Members of the Morris WRFC held a collegiate development clinic at their field at Mennen Arena. Many of the women on the Morris squad are already involved to some degree with the high school and youth programs that the Morris Rugby Corp. is building. This past weekend, Morris women reached out to college ruggers with their first ever skills clinic. Over 100 participants from 5 different schools were in attendance. Led by Morris coach Kate Brennan and staffed by team members, the clinic sought to teach safe and effective fundamental rugby skills. A full day of conditioning, technical demos, and drills culminated in a series of half-field scrimmages that kept everyone on the field challenged (and warm!) on a blustery March day. The clinic was also designed to expose college women to the existence of club rugby and foster an interest in continued play after graduation. Women’s rugby is the nation’s fastest growing sport and many players come to game in college or even after. Learning proper playing techniques in a fun environment is vital to the effort to keep new players playing for life. Many players who attended are local to the Morris area and this clinic, designed to become an annual event, will help Morris attain visibility in the college communities and offer strong potential for recruiting these young women to play for Morris in years to come.
