Requirements

Every team should have these items, or must do these things, in order to function:

  1. The Rugby Union Law Book - The Laws of the game. You can purchase the law book from any rugby supplier. (Matt Godek Rugby & Soccer Supply call 1-800-USA-RUGBY) or go to the International Rugby Board Web site http://www.irb.com and then click on laws & regulations on the left side of the page.
  2. Participant Safety Program video - produced by USA Rugby. Contact the National Office, Tel: (303) 539-0300
  3. A coaching manual - USA Rugby has published a number of coaching manuals and you may wish to contact them. However, you can get excellent coaching manuals from any rugby supplier. An excellent text is published by the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and is called "Even Better Rugby". It deals with teaching the sport to beginners and explains how to structure your practices. Other good texts include, Jim Greenwood's "Total Rugby" and "Think Rugby".
  4. Club & Individual Participation Program (CIPP) Package - USA Rugby has a national office that coordinates and administers the sport. The CIPP program was instituted so that the national office would have funding that was constant. Every player must be enrolled in the CIPP program. If you would like additional information call the National Office at (303) 539-0300.
  5. Certified Coach Required - In an effort to raise the overall playing standards of each club the Met. NY Union is requiring all clubs to have at least one qualified coach, even if that individual be a current player. Each club should consider sending two or three individuals from different years (i.e. a freshman, sophomore, and junior) to a USA Rugby Coaching Clinic. These are held throughout the year all over the USA. Contact USA Rugby for details by going to http://www.USARugby.org

Coaches who currently hold a USA Level I, II, or III accreditation are certified until August 2008.

USA Rugby updated their coaching programs in 2005 and you can do elements on-line. Go to the USA Rugby web site at: http://www.USARugby.org
